Top 5 places to visit in Kerala – My Favorites

Greenery, Coconut trees, Tea and Coffee estates, all these things remind us of one place that is Kerala – God’s Own Country. Be it for a weekend getaway or for a long vacation, Kerala has the most beautiful locations one should definitely experience. The right time to visit Kerala is during early monsoon or in winter to witness mother nature up close and green.

Below are my top favorite places to visit in Kerala:

Wayanad

I had been to Wayanad about 4 years back in February, which is the end of winter in Kerala. It is around 300 kms from Bengaluru. Calm and quiet, enriched with scenic beauty, tradition and wildlife, Wayanad is a blend of nature and heaven together; it is one of the best places to visit in Kerala. Wayanad is a hill station with beautiful scenic places and hair pin curves to experience. There are humongous fields of coffee, tea estates and paddy fields which is why people call it the Green Paradise of Kerala. It is an amazing place for a 2 to 3-day trip to reconnect yourself with nature, breathe fresh air and enjoy the scenic beauty around.

Kannur

Recently, I had been to Kannur as a weekend getaway for some recreation time from all the work load I go through each day. It is around 330 km from Bengaluru and we went by road. We booked a resort which was right next to the sea so it gave us a brilliant view to wake up and sleep to. We visited the Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach which is shallow and that makes it an amazing beach to play in. It is located between Kannur and Thalassery. There is also the St. Angelo Fort to see here which was built in 1505 by the first Portuguese Viceroy of India. We also visited Thalassery fort which was built by the British East India Company in 1708.

Vagamon Hills Station

Vagamon is an offbeat place situated across the Idukki-Kottayam border. This hill station attracts visitors and tourists from across the world to feel nature’s rhythm in a wild & adventurous way. Studded with meadows, gardens, tea plantations and valleys, Vagamon is a promising hill station and holiday retreat in India. Mystic hills, perfectly maintained lawns and fresh air are quite enough to make your visit refreshing. It cannot be expressed in words but one has to visit this place to experience the magical spell of nature.

Alleppey Backwaters

Alleppey, which is popularly known as the ‘Venice of East’, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Kerala. There are numerous canals, lagoons and lakes, coconut trees and pristine backwaters which adorn this place. The pleasant climatic conditions also plays a crucial role in making the place a must visit travel destination. Away from the villages, the Alleppey backwaters have a sprinkling of well-kept bungalows. Some are even nestled on the tiny islands in the middle of these backwaters. A perfect recluse from the maddening crowds! The Best Season to visit this place is from September to March.

Varkalaimg-20160819-wa0012

Varkala is one place which meets the interests of nature lovers and honeymooners. It also fulfills the requirement of adventure lovers as there are numerous thrilling activities such as Parasailing and Paragliding which are organized regularly here. Its seaside is quite well-known among people from other countries as it provides a variety of options such as Sun bathing, boat riding, surfing and Ayurvedic massages. Along with this, there are also temples that add to the architectural splendor of the place. The best season to visit this place is during October to March.

There are many more interesting locations in Kerala,  Kerala Holiday packages and Kerala Tour Packages will help you make your holiday plans. So don’t wait, just pack those bags and go on a trip worth remembering for a lifetime 🙂

Ashwini
